Five Herbal Allies for Immune System Support

Written by Airamidt Daimonikos

Using herbs is a beautiful way to connect to the natural world. Herbs are wonderful plants that understand our bodies and support a well balanced life. In this blog we will be discovering 5 immune system allies.

  1. Elderberry (Sambucus)

Elderberry is a hot topic herb a lot of people hear about. Elderberry and Elderflower are both wonderful allies for cold and flu, also for respiratory infections.  Elderberry tincture or gummies is a go to for many herbalists. If taken at the first sign of a cold or flu it can reduce the duration of the flu. If taken as a tea or tincture it promotes sweating, removing toxins from the body and reducing the fever after the pathogen has been removed. If taken everyday it can help ease symptoms of oncoming flus and colds.

2. Ginger (Zingiber officinale)

Ginger is a very warming herb that stimulates the inner fire and helps support digestion , heart health and immunity. A cup of warm ginger tea will help warm the body during a cold or flu, which heats the body and promotes sweeting. Ginger also has antimicrobial properties and helps support excretion which makes ginger a very good herb to help support the body through  the cold and flu.  Ginger is also antiviral which helps prevent the virus from attaching to the cell walls.  Ginger also supports digestion and eases motion sickness.

3. Peppermint (Mentha × piperita)

Peppermint tea supports the immune system though its volatile oils  and helps support the body through colds and flus. It also helps ease congestion and coughs. It is an antimicrobial which makes it effective over a lot of different bacterial ,viral and fungal infections.   Peppermint also eases indigestion and supports movement of bile through the system.  Peppermint also helps support mental clarity and can be used as a pick-me-up throughout the day.

4. Thyme (Lamiaceae)

Thyme is packed with vitamin C as well as vitamin A which helps support your immune system.  If you feel a cold coming on, thyme can help guide you back to good health. As an antimicrobial and antifungal it helps support the body in good health and stimulates the body's defense.  It also helps ease coughs and sore throats and supports good digestion and acts as an astringent.

5. Sage (Lamiaceae)

Sage promotes long life and increased wisdom, this is a plant of many uses and mesmerizes me till this day. Sage is an antimicrobial, antiseptic and anti-inflammatory and known to help ease flu symptoms, relieving sore throats , aiding the body in fighting off colds and easing cramping in the gut. While sage tea is pungent in taste its benefits are worth it. Aside from supporting a healthy immune system, sage also supports cognitive health.

I hope this little introduction to immune supporting allies helps you in your daily life and teaches you a bit more about the wonderful world of plants we have around us!
